Cloudflare R2: S3 Without Egress Fees
R2 is object storage — like Amazon S3, but without data download (egress) fees. AWS S3 charges ~€0.09/GB for egress. For a website with images, that can be hundreds of euros per month.
R2 egress: €0. Always.
In Modulo CMS we use R2 for:
- Images for real estate listings
- Photos for e-shop products
- Uploaded PDFs and documents

How It Works Together
Nuxt (Pages) → Worker → D1 (data) + R2 (files)
When a user loads a real estate listing page:
- The Nuxt Worker fetches listing metadata from D1
- Images are links to R2 objects
- R2 serves the images directly via Cloudflare CDN
No application server. No database connection pool. No file server.
Limitations
D1 is not for every use case. It is not suitable for:
- High-concurrency transactions (e.g., booking cinema seats)
- Complex JOINs on millions of rows
- Real-time operations requiring sub-millisecond latency
For a CMS with typical traffic — these limitations are not relevant.
Conclusion
D1 + R2 is not just a cheaper alternative to the traditional stack. It is a different way of thinking about infrastructure — where database and storage are managed services with no operational costs.
